Miscellaneous Bulbs

A Selection Of Bulbs for Spring Planting

Crocosmia are perfect in the southern garden.  They grow from corms like gladiolus and you can tell they are related. They produce large clumps of narrow sword like foliage with long arching stems. Spectacular color when in bloom. In the deep south they even like a little shade from the sun in the afternoon. You can work them into several flower beds from full sun to afternoon shade. They come back every year so no need to dig.

  • Crocosmia ( Montbretia ) x Emily Mckenzie

Clump forming with flaming orange flowers with red centers and a yellow throat. If you want cut flowers this is an excellent choice with much taller stems. The stems can get 4 feet tall and are nice planted near shrubs in your beds. Humming Birds like these and they are so easy to grow. These help when they are fighting at the feeders. This variety has larger flowers.

Liatris ( Blazing Star )

  • Liatris spicata - Large Bulbs – I always want to plant these but the small bulbs are so hard to get through the first year in the deep south. Problem solved with these large bulbs that will finally make it easy to get a stand of these started. The nice thing about Liatris is once you get them started they are drought tolerant and you will have them forever. A native plant that forms small clumps with tall upright stems. Very long flowering with flowers opening from the top down. Great for naturalizing. Very heat tolerant. Nice Cut Flower.Liatris

Tricyrtis  ( Toad Lily )

  • Tricyrtis formosana – You will love these. I tortured these plants in a bed behind the shed under an old oak. They survived on neglect and bloomed in the late summer never fail. They increased every year and I was amazed at how good it looked. They spread by underground rhizomes to form clumps of tall, gracefully arching stems with orchid like flowers. When it blooms everyone ask “ what is that ?” It is very elegant to be called a Toad Lily. These are shipped bare root.
