Southern White Bearded Iris (Iris albicans)                            Heirloom

White Iris This is the first iris to bloom in the spring here on the farm. This is my Grandmothers iris and her Grandmothers iris. Has withstood the test of time and no southern garden would be complete without them. Grows and multiplies quickly. These can be planted around the base of tall pines for that true southern charm.

Iris Black Magic Early blooming and REBLOOMS. A dark blackish purple early blooming iris that loves the South and is a rebloomer. Ours grow 18"-24" tall and have a pronounced licorice fragrance. One of the best for growing in the deep South with the Iris Albicans. Recommended in the book "Garden Bulbs for the South". You can grow it up north also. Very tough and multiplies.

Iris Cranapple               Early-Mid          BB                  Aitken               1995

Iris Cranapple

This one is not a heirloom yet but is already proving it can withstand the test of time. A great Iris in the deep South. It is thriving and multiplying fast. A rich velvety smooth deep red bi-tone and it blooms early. Only 24 inches tall it really packs a color punch. Perfect North or South. One of my favorites and I love this color.

Iris Germanica              Historic                      TB                                  1753

A true Southern Heirloom Iris that is still found growing at old home sites with no care.  Rich purple bi-tone with lighter standards and dark purple falls. This is a tetraploid and has doubled the chromosomes of most Iris. This is one of the reasons it multiplies and thrives in the hot South.  The blooms are on 3 foot tall stems and very showy. Famous for being in Van Gogh's painting but better known in Dixie as your Grandmother's Purple Iris. North or South this is a winner. Early Bloomer

Iris Indian Chief             Historic          TB                  Ayres                1929

From the roaring twenties we have one of the best old Iris you can grow. A pretty Maroon Bi-tone with Standards that are a pale pinkish red. The Falls are a velvety red maroon. A clump in bloom is breathtaking. A vigorous grower. It will take quite a bit of shade and still bloom. Often found growing at old home sites where it thrives on neglect. Very tough and early blooming. 3 feet tall. Showy !!! Early Blooming

One of the strongest Iris anywhere. Lavender Violet Standards and Velvety Pansy Violet Falls. Blooms early to mid spring on 3 1/2 foot tall stems. It is one of the survivors found growing at old home places when no one has cared for them in over forty years. You can plant it once and leave it to the Grandchildren.

Iris lutescens                                                                                 Rare

A dwarf species iris native to the Mediterranean, 4 to 6 inches tall.  This particular variety features a profusion of deep blue-violet blooms with white beards tinged blue.  Blooms very early and heralds the iris season.  Quick to increase, reliable of flower, excellent for rock gardens or edging a border.

Zone Hardiness: Since this iris is native to France and Spain it should grow well all across the south. We are still unsure of zones and need more feed back.
